The ZL1 Camaro boasts 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, that give it a 3.5 second 0-60 mph time, roughly what we expect from the GT500. The Mustang will be quicker on the quarter-mile, however, and the aerodynamics, Magneride suspension, and track-tuned handling may also give it the edge on the race course.
No horsepower or torque numbers are available, but the one GT500 that was built this way was sent to Goodyear for tire testing at speeds of up to 170 mph, and it averaged 142 mph for 500 miles to set a record. The price for this ultimate Shelby Mustang, dubbed Super Snake, was to be $7500.
Richard Ellis, the current owner, performed a light restoration after he took ownership, sourcing the correct wiring and hoses for the engine, a period-correct fire extinguisher, Shelby 10-spoke wheels, and even an original set of Goodyear Thunderbolt economy tires.
The early GT 500 engineering prototype was the fastest car ever to lap Ford's twisty handling loop, except for the GT 40s, of course. And the same car cut a quarter-mile in 13.6 seconds at 106 mph.
